1. Messages to find customers

In person or on the phone

Hi, I'm [your name]. I help local businesses get a new website. I can have a modern site with your logo, photos and services ready for you to look at in a few days, and seeing it costs you nothing. If you like it, the site has a small monthly subscription, and I charge [your fee] for setting it up and helping you. Would you like me to make one for you?

Text or social media message

Hi [name], I'm [your name], a local web designer. I noticed [business] [has no website / has a site that is hard to use on a phone]. I can build you a new one to look at, free, in a few days. Interested?

E-mail

Subject: A new website for [business] Hi [name], I'm [your name], an independent webmaster here in [town]. I build fast, modern websites for local businesses: [business] could have one with your logo, photos, services and a contact or booking form. I can have a first version ready for you to look at within a few days. Looking costs nothing. If you want to keep it, the site's subscription is paid on the site itself, and my fee for setting it up and helping you is [your fee]. Can I make one for you? I only need a few details and your OK. [your name] [your phone]

Send each message personally to one business at a time. Never send mass e-mails or spam.

2. Work order checklist

  • The customer said yes, and agreed that you send their details to iNterGine.
  • Business name, contact person, e-mail, phone, city.
  • What they do, in a few plain sentences.
  • Current website and social links.
  • 1 to 3 screenshots of websites they like, and what they like about each.
  • Pages and features they want.
  • Logo, a few of their own photos, any words they want on the site.
  • Special instructions in plain words.

Ready? Send the work order.

3. Price worksheet

Work out what your time is worth before you name a price. Fill in your own numbers:

Your workHours
Meeting the customer, collecting their details and content[ ]
Writing and sending the work order[ ]
Checking the finished site, making their changes[ ]
Showing them how it works, handing it over[ ]
Travel and calls[ ]
Total hours x your hourly rate = your setup fee[ ]

For ongoing care, estimate your hours per month (updates, photos, posts, questions) x your hourly rate = your monthly care fee. Remember the site subscription is separate: either the customer pays it on the site, or you pay it and add it to your price.

4. Simple service agreement
